#talk 3: My Actress for Heavy Sweetness Ash-Like Frost (Jin Mi)

For those, who celebrate chinese new year, happy eve of chinese new year! :)

I was watching an old Hong Kong movie a few days ago, 真的爱你 (I really love you), starring a very young Maggie Cheung and Jacky Cheung. I had loved it as a kid, and still love it. It's a whimsical funny HK version of Pretty Woman, with Maggie Cheung acting as a cosmetic counter girl instead of a call girl.

I was struck while watching the movie at how luminous Maggie Cheung was --- and that was it, she really looked like how I envisioned Jin Mi looked. Someone who could be drop dead gorgeous, but with that kind of child-like whimsy in the eyes and mischief in the smile.

You have to catch her in movies when she is young, because the pictures don't do her justice. But, here are some of her younger ancient movie pictures:

No idea where this picture is from. Haha.

This is when she was acting as the Green Snake for the absolute classic, Legend of the White Snake. Ah, still my favourite version of the legend.

Do you have your own person in mind for Jin Mi? :) Do share!

Edited: Here's a link to the movie, I Really Love You, if anyone is interested in watching.

  1. Happy Lunar New Year ! Did you get to go back to Sg to celebrate with your family?

Firstly, I want to say I am not a Maggie's fan or hater but I find her look too matured and not cute enough to be Jin Mi. Maybe as the Jin Mi who is always sad & weepy in the middle of the book but never the Jin Mi who is so funny & silly at the beginning. Off hand, I can't think of anyone else but I've a cartoon image of my Jin Mi, lol. Btw, I read this novel will be adapted into a drama so I hope the casting will be satisfactory.

    1. Happy Lunar New Year! :) My husband flew up to HK to celebrate with me.

Haha, I think most people will find her look too matured, especially since the image most people have of her is her iconic in the Mood for Love. I've edited the entry to include a link to the movie if you are ever interested to watch it. She's so lively, cute and silly there! Just like Julia Roberts was in Pretty Woman <3

But, I also like that we all have our own Jin Mis in our heart. OMG I am so excited for this to be adapted, but this will seriously fail if Phoenix and Jin Mi is not cast properly - you may end up just having a very annoying female lead who appears extremely selfish haha.

    2. OMG! Really? This will be adapted into a drama? Which production company will be doing it? Sometimes, you can tell if the drama will be a total disaster by knowing which production company has bought the rights to the novel.

It will be tough to cast the three leads. I'm sure somebody's not going to be happy, no matter which actors get cast. Out of curiosity, who are possible actresses and actors who would be appropriate as Jin Mi, Xu Feng, and Ren Yu?

    3. I am not sure because I can't find any proper new sources that it will be adapted yet. Hopefully people can share. :)

    4. Oh, peanuts forgot to leave her name but you should be able to guess who is the super busybody, lol.

Only the right to the book has been sold, no news on casting & filming yet so you'll not be able to find any info. For ancient drama, they take donkey yrs to make preparation. Eg. Tangren acquired the right for 10 Miles of Peach Blossom ages ago but still no news on casting & filming. Only Yumama works quite fast bcos he butchers the novels.

    5. Heehee I guessed it was you, peanuts! Oh wow so cool. I do hope they film it! Sometimes it also depends on the success of the other projects I guess! If 10 miles doesn't do well (whenever it finally gets made), it would affect the budget for Heavy Sweetness. Yeah, hate Yumama's writing!

  2. Hi! Interesting post! There will be an adaptation of Heavy Sweetness Ash-Like Frost?
    Seriously? oO I'm very doubtful.
But if it's the case, I'm thinking of Liu Shi Shi. I don't know exactly why. Maybe because she was cute as a young and playful Ruo Xi in BBJX. Xia0yuer also inspired me a lot. I do remember her dream cast (wich became also mine haha)

    1. Liu Shi Shi appears to be the most popular choice for most productions haha! She's beautiful in a soft way, usually you will find her prettier the more you look (haha that's the case for me) and she is also beautiful in a non vixenish threatening way. But, I guess it will also depend on when it finally gets made! Haha she might become too big (only does movies) or too old by then. Haha.

    2. I don't want this to happen...I have a feeling that I'll be deceived by the cast and everything. ='(

    3. Teehee it's interesting that you don't want it to happen! It's like loving a book before it becomes adapted and becomes a crazy phenomenon - it's double-edged, you get more materials that you may love or hate. I think I will look forward to it if it's not done by yumama. One of my favourite film book adaptations was Howl's Moving Castle <3
