Recommendations & Translation Requests

It's quite interesting to see that the Pillow Book has such international fans! I think Tang Qi Gong Zi writes extremely long chapters - Chapter 18 itself has 3 parts and Part 1 was already very long. I hope to post Part 2 up by the end of the week and finish Part 3 by next week (cross fingers).

I've been looking for new C-novels to get addicted to and hopefully find my proper project to translate. But, I've not been able to really get into any new C-novels - I have tried a few (eg Piao Piao's Desire for Immortality (飘飘欲仙)) but stopped at Chapter 10 when the story felt hopelessly meandering. Some female leads are really awful - either too stupid, too cold or too selfish!

There have been a lot of raves for Hua Xu Yin (华胥引) and I've read Chenguang's lovely translation of the prologue. I was rather tempted to start to read it seriously and maybe continue translating it but the side stories and couples are so tragic! I don't think I have the heart for it. I will probably read it one day properly though because it has a tiger (haha).

The other one that caught my eye was Hua Qian Gu (仙侠奇缘之花千骨)and Peanuts posted an amazing summary and review. To be honest, the ending (without the epilogue) kind of makes me want to spear both the main characters because it sounds like they excel at ruining their own lives. But, the set up sounds good - future leader of the Demons and current leader of the Deities (I'm guessing or the forces of good) falling in love and being opposed and all that sort of delicious angst. I love Romeo and Juliet set-ups minus the contrived deaths and tragedy. I think Hua Qian Gu is technically happy ending if one clutches tightly onto the epilogue though I'm still hovering before I jump off the cliff and read it.

I've been saving up Who Gets the World (且试天下)because so many people have said the female lead is like Huang Rong, only my most favourite wuxia Heroine ever. But, from the summary, this one appears low on the fluff and romantic development (sigh, I'm such a fluff lover). It's also very long and may be too ambitious for my first translation project.

Does anyone have any good C-novels to recommend or translate? The main requirement is a happy ending! I also have a preference for books with more humour. I will probably still shop around and see if I can find something that suits my taste, if not I will probably go re-read Three Lives Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossom and do a full detailed summary and review first. I wonder if anyone shares some of my pet peeves with C-novel blurbs - they are all definitely poetic, but they all sound the same and it's impossible to tell what the book is going to be about - except lots of mourning about fate and missed chances, insert sad line about a romance that fades in the wind.

Anyway, hope you have enjoyed the translation for Chapter 18 and I will really appreciate any recommendations <3.

  1. Hi, this is peanuts fr SSB. Thank you for your comment and link to your translation. Yah, Piao Piao is a silly book but the audio book is pretty funny. Not all the books posted in SSB have 5 stars rating. They are posted for varied taste and some of the average novels have good audio books.

Although I don't really like HQG, many people love it especialy queenanon. I don't like the book bcos I've never liked my teachers, lol. The book is highly rated and has many fans so your translation should be well-received. I am sure you want to translate something that appeal to yourself as well as the mass readers. Actually the actual ending is not that sad eventhough she lost her memory. She gets to live a happy and peaceful life with her beloved shifu.

I like WGTW's audio book but I believe it is rather difficult to translate the novel as the language is really very detailed and poetic so it may put somebody to sleep:P Also, romance is not featured that prominently in the novel. It will be more interesting to listen or watch this novel.

I think hamster translated the original version of 3L3W10MPB. Later, T7 did a revised version with additional wordings. If it is okay with both of you, you can work with hamster to help her to edit it as she also skipped around with her translation. Or, if you don't mind, you can email xiaoyuer and offer to help her with Heavy Sweetness. That book is a firm fav with many and it'll be good if you can take over and finish it if xiaoyuer has no time to continue.

    1. Dear Peanuts,

So kind of you to comment! I'm so grateful for your blog (and hui'er's?) and it was because of your blog I marathoned Heavy Sweetness and Ash-like frost. I love lidge and your translations for Come Eat Shan Shan.

I really wanted to kill Piao Piao most of the time, because I think the author wanted to make her sound funny and above it all, but I just kind of wanted to strangle her. Haha. And, all the other male characters were generically good looking and rather flat. Only the mysterious purple haired or is it gold haired person was intriguing but I just couldn't read on!

I shall try and read HQG and WGTW over the weekend and hopefully get addicted to either! I'm a bit of a fluffy romance person haha.

Actually, I'm not really using well known or obscure as a criteria for choosing the project since I just need something I really love to finish it regardless of how many people read the translations. I'm a bit of a completist (haha) when I start out to do something, so I just want to pick something I will continue and not want to kill the main character (haha).

Oh, I did not know there is a revised version. But I won't want to bother Hamster since she or he is doing such a fantastic job. I might ask Xiaoyuer, although I can't access her tumblr at all. Does it crashes for you? So I don't even know where she stops at and can't read her translations properly either.

    2. Actually Chancy is SSB's landlord and Jessy Hui is fanatical's landlord but I've been doing all the hard work & they only pop in once in a blue moon. Thus, I think I can lay claim to both blogs since I am the one who is doing all the updating:) I should have started my own blog:P

I read your translation in the plane & it is very good, similar std to hamster. Maybe you should tell hamster you've translated chapter 18 so you can save her some work:) She is very nice & I think she wants to clean up 3W3L10M but cannot find the time since she is translating PB now.

As for xiaoyuer, if you don't mind taking over her translation, I can ask her for you since I kind of know her. If she is okay, I can copy & paste her translation for your reference. Because many ppl like that book and you also like that book, it is such a waste if she is not going to continue with the translation.

It is not that I ask you to translate book which appeal to the mass. Bcos those books are rated so highly & well-liked so you and most ppl will probably also like them. It'll be a win-win situation if you translate something you and everyone also like as english translation of chinese novels is very limited. Thus, it is best not to duplicate or to translate something only you like:)

Btw, do you read modern novel? They are easier to translate & more fluffy & funny. I don't have the patient to read ancient novel bcos they are always super long & boring lol. This is bcos I can't read & depend on google translate. I'll listen to the good audio books of ancient novels.

    3. Hahaha! Wow you inherited two blogs!

Aww thanks that's awfully sweet of you to say! Ok, when I finish my chapter 18 translations I'll message her! I hope that helps. She's so amazing!

Ok! I haven't fully decided if I'll translate it since Xiaoyuer is doing such a great job. But maybe I'll continue if she doesn't plan on continuing! I don't know why I can't access her site though haha.

Oh yes I do! Though I love ancient novels more (heheh), because there are very few good modern novels. I'm actually a staunch jin yong fan and read most of his novels, but I enjoy the current batch of c-novels which are more feminine in nature. Also, you can't read Chinese? That's really amazing since you translate and review stuff so well!

    4. Drop me a line if you want to translate Heavy Sweetness & I'll email xiaoyuer. Ya, I can't access her tumblr also but I can get the translation from her if she doesn't want to continue with the translation.

There are plenty of good modern novels. They are shorter, funnier & more fluffy. I am a so-called expert on modern novels so you can consult me anytime:P Just tell me what type of story you like beside happy ending, lol.

Then you must read WGTW trilogy bcos it is kind of like the female version of JY's novels where you get many swoon-worthy guys after the female lead not the other way round in JY's novels. You also get strong & intelligent female leads, not flower vase except Huang Rong in JY's novels.

    5. Ok! I am reading the other C-novels at the moment to decide my final project. Thanks so much for helping :)

Ooh! I don't have particular preferences but I like funny fluffy modern novels where the female character is not an idiot.

Haha you really make me want to read WGTW! I will definitely share with you my views when I finish it. So much to read, so little time!

    6. If the female character is not an idiot, the story won't be fluffy & funny:P Shan Shan is not that bad as she is just silly & slow but that girl in Kao is truly stupid. I am a Gu Man's fan so all her books are good:P

老婆,跟我回家吧 Wife, Come Home With Me is a fav with many if you like contract marriage kind of book. 你敢娶我敢嫁 You Dare Marry Me, I Dare Marry You is also well-liked but I've yet to read it. 兔子压倒窝边草 Tuzi Yadao Wo Bian Cao is a funny book abt childhood sweetheart. 喂, 别乱来!Hey, Don’t Act Unruly! is also a sweet and nice book. All my recommendations have tolerable female leads who are not really idiots but also not smarties.

I suggest you listen to the audiobook for WGTW with your reading as it'll enhance your experience:)

    7. Thank you, peanuts! You are are so awesome. I went to read your other recommendation on your blog, 放弃你, 下辈子吧! Omg - the main lead is cool and a borderline psychopath as well hahaha. There were points where I was like - er I can't read on, but then I had this insane need to finish it. It got a bit crazy at the end, but at least it ended well!

I love contract marriages! I shall go read it. Thank you for your recommendations! I am amazed that you say you can't read chinese!!!

    8. Huh, did I recommend it bcos I don't even remember reading such a book? I think it is a book on those polls I got from baidu. Since you've read it, would you like to translate the synopsis into English and post it in SSB? If yes, tell me & I'll enable the register function for you as I've disabled it to avoid spam. After you've registered, I'll give you author access so you can post any book you like.

Yes, I can't read Chinese but I can understand Chinese. Thanks to technology advancement, I've google translate to help me:)

I got your msg & will email xiaoyuer tomorrow. I check SSB & Fanatical more often than my inbox so it is best your leave msg there:P

    9. Oh, it is a book posted by seoul, another girl from Singapore who likes to read C-novels with happy ending, lol.

    10. Ok, sure I don't mind! Haha! Oh yeah, I remember reading about it from your blog haha. I won't recommend it per se though - it's really addictive but it's also kind of horrifying in the love games the main lead and second male lead plays!

    11. Oh, if you give me some time as well, I will probably translate the first few chapters of that book to share. The book starts off really well, then goes crazy, then ends quite well again. It's a bit psychotic haha.

    12. Good news as xiaoyuer has given you the greenlight. Below is her reply:

She definitely welcome to continue the translations. I've been really busy so I havent been as active in SSB. I don't know why my tumblr has been acting up but I'll try to fix it as soon as I have time.

Thus, you can start ASAP, lol. It is best you concentrate on Heavy Sweetness & forget abt doing a few chapters for 放弃你, 下辈子吧! since it is not such a great book. Once you've a chapter done, post a link in SSB to let everyone know:)

  2. Chancy from SSB

浮生梦·三生约 and I just have to bring up 三千鸦杀.

For historical setting: 春秋大梦 and 孤芳不自赏

WGTW I haven't finished yet still. I think it's a book you have to gulp down in one read or you'll lose interest.

    1. Hello Chancy!

I read lots of your awesome summaries and comments on SSB!

I shall check out those recommendations! All happy endings right? :)

WGTW appears to have a lot of history and world-building! I shall def put it on my to try list but not at the top because it looks like a long plunge. Haha.

    2. Below is peanuts's opinion which you can trust, haha.....

浮生梦·三生约 is kind of similar to 3L3W10MPB but less precise & more concise. I like it slightly more than 3L3W10MPB but it could be bcos the audio book is good. The only thing missing is a cute little dough.

三千鸦杀 has an awesome male lead but I don't like the female lead. The story is ok, not that addictive or fast-pace.

I didn't read 春秋大梦 bcos I dislike the historical figures in the book. I also, didn't read 孤芳不自赏 bcos I am slack & don't like the male lead's name, lol. It has an incomplete but nice manhua & is extremely popular in SSB cos the female lead is smart.

    3. Aww that sounds exciting! I shall try them! Thanks so much for the recommendations. I just join the world of c-novels and all the books are so long so I'm wary about falling into a pit of doom. Hahaha!

    4. Chancy! I just marathoned Killing of Three Thousand Crows last night (and slept at 4 am darn) and OMG it was good. I love Fu Jiu Yun, one of the best male characters ever. <3 Thanks for the recommendation. I'm surprised it's not more popular!

    5. To each its own as most people think the book is bland except for FJY:P Hey, I choose him as one of my fav male characters if you read my blog, heehee - peanuts

      Delete
    6. Ooh I shall go find that entry on your blog. I love love love FJY! I do think that the story concept is actually extremely simplistic and at the heart of it - this is a a story about FJY's love, about him loving a girl for ten lifetimes, for wanting to go against heaven, fate, and even testing the limits of his existence, to love someone. This story is all about FJY and everything and everyone else are mere foils - hence I think the story sags and wanes when it doesn't have him. So, I really loved it, love how in loving someone deeper than himself, FJY loved himself to true existence (which was always his eternal question - who and what is he? What did he live for?). I am a total fan girl! Heeheehee.

    7. I just got 1 paragraph on him bcos Dong Hua took his spot, lol. Here is the link if you can't find it: http://hui3r.wordpress.com/2013/05/31/challenge-3-most-favourite-male-characters/

    8. Oh just read it! Superb entry! You really make me want to go and read WGTW! Hahaha. I really need to find the time though, all these late nights are terrible for my eyes!

Yeah, Dong Hua was my absolute favourite, but omg FJY is really so awesome and his epilogue was absolutely the best male epilogue ever.

    1. Hello Lovasia, Heavy Sweet and Ash-like frost is definitely high on my likely to translate list! I really love that book and will translate it unless I find a more suitable book. I'm reading a few other C-novels to decide because I'm also considering length and difficulty! :)

    1. You are welcome! I'm trying to be careful about the translating project I choose in the end, since it's going to be a heavy commitment. But, even if I don't translate it in full again, I may do a detailed summary if that helps! Do you have problems reading Chinese?
